There are many talented graphical artists in the world who could eventually work on the Pokemon TCG. Whether they will get the chance to do so, is obviously a different matter. Today, I want to highlight an artist’s work which would be, in my opinion, a great fit. Allow me to introduce you to GyuraGyura.
Who is GyuraGyura?
Although the name GyuraGyura might not ring a bell, they are definitely talented. The pseudonym belongs to one of the many people who enjoy drawing or designing Pokemon fanart. In some cases, such people are noticed by The Pokemon Company and may land a job as an actual TCG artist. While no one can say GyuraGyura will see such a development, their art wouldn’t look out of place.
Not much else is known about the artist at this time. They are from Japan, love drawing, and love Pokemon. That alone makes it a viable fit for the Pokemon TCG, although thousands of such art-focused enthusiasts exist. However, their X bio also mentions “Pokemon fanart” as their “primary focus”, which is quite promising.
With over 26,000 followers on X, it is not hard to see why such a talented individual would be a nice addition to the TCG in the future. Many people seem to like the work by GyuraGyura, and some of the artwork is quite spectacular. Moreover, we have recently had other artists go from fanart to becoming Pokemon TCG artists, so there are plenty of “precedents” for such a transition.
Fantastic Pokemon Art With a Twist
The name GyuraGyura came on my radar after browsing the ArtofPkm website for any new card designs or artworks being unveiled. Today, they added a profile for this particular artist and the fan artwork they made so far. Several dozen unique pieces have been showcased, and a fair few of them drew my attention right away.
Take a look at the Gastly drawn by GyuraGyura as an example. We have seen numerous forms of Gastly, some happy, mostly scheming, a few borderline evil. This rendition, however, is…. peculiar. It looks almost a bit depressed, but still retains that “scheming” look in its eyes. Combined with making it look dejected, it is perhaps one of the coolest Gastly renditions to date.
Other artwork by GyuraGyura shares the same characteristics. We see familiar Pokemon – Oddish, Espathra, Whimsicott – in a very appealing art style. It is lovely hand-drawn artwork with distinct shapes, lines, and backgrounds changing depending on which Pokemon is depicted.
It does appear there is a slight preference to draw Gardevoir, so let’s hope some Pokemon TCG-related opportunities arise there!
